Our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist works with women in all life stages, to optimize their pelvic health and well-being by utilizing external and internal therapy if appropriate. We focus on education for proper loading and exercising of the pelvic floor and surrounding areas to optimize the pelvic function or treat symptoms such as:
- Pelvic floor pain (painful intercourse, pain related to bladder and bowel function)
- Pelvic girdle pain and lower back pain during pregnancy
- Urinary or bowel urgency and incontinence
- Discomfort secondary to pelvic prolapses
- Preparation for labor
- Recovery post labor and cesarean birth (scar management and core strengthening)
- Constipation and strain
Pre and postnatal Physiotherapy is specific Physiotherapy treatment for women who are facing difficulties either during pregnancy or postpartum. This can include back, hip, and/or pelvic pain while pregnant, or for a period of time after delivery.
A few common conditions we treat are:
- Diastasis recti
- SI Joint pain
- Pelvic pain
- Lower back pain
- Incontinence
Prenatal physiotherapy also can contribute with the preparation of the pelvic floor for your delivery, relaxing the pelvic floor muscles and stretch the perineal tissues to avoid or minimize tearing during delivery. Along with improving prenatal fitness, this effective technique will contribute to a healthier pregnancy and delivery.
Post Natal Pelvic floor assessments usually occur at the 6 weeks mark to see how the pelvic floor muscles have healed and their endurance levels. In case of a cesarean birth a scar assessment ensures that the incision has healed properly and providing adequate exercises and stretches to strengthen the core and improve scar healing.
