What is Acupuncture? And is it right for you?

This is one of the questions that we get often here: how does acupuncture work AND how can it help me heal and recover from an injury.

Such a great question!

Let’s start by diving into WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points are located along energy pathways (also known as meridians), to help restore the balance of energy flow and promote overall well-being.

Neurofunctional Acupuncture (what we do here at Physio IT) combines traditional Chinese acupuncture with an electrical stimulation to enhance the effect, particularly activating the muscle, nerves and nervous system.

Our lovely Indy walks you through the different types of acupuncture, how each one works, and their unique benefits. She also demonstrates how they’re used in practice, making it easy to understand how this approach might be right for you.

Now let’s look at HOW ACUPUNCTURE CAN COMPLEMENT YOUR TREATMENT and help you heal and recover.

  1. Enhanced Pain Relief: Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, providing an additional layer of pain relief to complement the techniques used in physiotherapy.
  2. Improved Circulation: Acupuncture promotes blood flow to the injured or affected areas, supplying them with vital nutrients and oxygen, which aids in the healing process.
  3. Stress Reduction: Physiotherapy sessions can be intense, and acupuncture can help reduce stress and anxiety by activating the body’s relaxation response. This allows for a more effective and enjoyable rehabilitation experience.
  4. Muscle Relaxation: Acupuncture can help relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation, complementing the hands-on techniques used in physiotherapy to further improve range of motion and flexibility.
  5. Improved Muscle Function: Acupuncture can help re-engage and restore muscle function by improving the communication between the nervous system and muscles, enhancing strength and coordination.
  6. Faster Recovery: When acupuncture is integrated with physiotherapy, it can accelerate the healing process, potentially reducing the overall duration of your rehabilitation journey.
  7. Holistic Approach: Combining acupuncture with physiotherapy allows for a comprehensive approach to your well-being. It addresses not only the physical symptoms but also the underlying imbalances that may contribute to your condition.

What do you think?!  Would acupuncture complement your physio treatment?
