When you’re recovering from an injury, surgery, or have stitches or pins in place, keeping a close eye on your healing site is essential. Even with proper care, infections can sometimes develop — and early detection can make all the difference in preventing complications.
Below are common signs and symptoms of infection to watch for:
1. Fever
A mild fever can sometimes indicate your body is fighting off an infection. If your temperature rises or persists, it’s important to get it checked.
2. Pus or Discharge
Yellow or green pus is not a good sign and can mean that bacteria are present in the wound.
3. Foul Odour
An unpleasant or unusual smell coming from the wound often accompanies an infection.
4. Redness
Mild redness is normal right after a procedure, but spreading redness or increasing intensity around the wound may signal infection.
5. Red Streak
A red line that starts at your wound and moves up your hand or arm is a serious sign that infection could be spreading.
6. Warmth
If the area around your wound feels warmer than the surrounding skin, this could indicate inflammation or infection.
7. Swelling
Swelling or hardness around the wound site may mean that the area is irritated or infected.
If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, please contact our clinic right away to inform your treating therapist, and reach out to your doctor immediately. Early attention can help prevent the infection from worsening and promote a smoother recovery.
