Have you ever stopped to notice how many breaths you take in a single minute? Most people breathe between 12 and 18 times per minute, and while that’s considered normal, it’s actually faster than what our bodies are designed for when we’re truly at rest.
Ideally, the average breathing rate for a calm, balanced body is around 5 breaths per minute. When we breathe faster than that, it can be a sign that our body is stuck in a “fight or flight” mode—a state of tension, alertness, or even anxiety. Over time, this can impact how efficiently we use oxygen, how well our heart functions, and even how clearly we think.
When you consciously slow down your breathing, something amazing happens:
your brain, heart, and lungs begin to work in harmony. Your body shifts from stress mode to rest and recovery, and you may feel more grounded, peaceful, and present.
So, take a moment today to notice your breath.
Slow it down.
Inhale deeply through your nose, and exhale gently through your mouth.
You might be surprised at how quickly your body relaxes and your mind feels clearer.
Happy breathing from all of us at Physio IT!
