HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BODY DURING GARDENING SEASON

GARDENING SEASON IS HERE!

WAHOO.. who else is as excited as we are?!

Let’s look at how you can protect your body while you garden!

I don’t know about you but this is something I never think about when I garden. I just bend and twist, pull, dig and keep going without awareness of how my body is being affected until I feel it the next day. Eek!

As we gear up for gardening season, let’s make sure our bodies are safe and pain free!  Remember the following:

  1. Lift with your hips and knees – not your back
We sometimes have a tendency to bend and lift using our backs putting a strain on our lower back.  Take a moment as you change position or about to lift something to remind yourself to use your legs, hips, knees using the muscles that are meant to be used.
  2. The closer the plant, shrub or tree is to your belly button, the less force goes through your body
Always hold the item closer to your core as this reduces the weight of the item and ensures you are not putting a strain on the rest of your body. Pick up the item and bring it to your belly button then move forward to where you want to go.
  3. Always step and turn, do your best not to twist
Bring awareness to the movements you are doing.  Pivot and/or step towards the item, face it and then pick it up.  The less twisting you can do, the better it is for your body.  Twisting can truly bring strain & pain to your back, neck and legs.

This season make sure you are following these 3 tips to help you have a healthy and pain free body.
